Winter Hootenanny at the Kirkland Art Center

On Friday, January 27th, come out to the Kirkland Art Center’s WINTER HOOTENANNY for some hot tunes on a cold night! Local band The Boom Chickens will play and MC an evening of original songs from a local all-star lineup of Gina Holsopple, J. Schnitt, and A Quarter to Orange. Audience members are encouraged to enjoy snacks, drinks, dancing, and camaraderie while listening to locally sourced, free-range music.

For any audience members who play an instrument and are curious about getting involved with local music sessions, representatives from The Mohawk Valley Bluegrass Association, Gina Marie Music Studio, and local Irish group Craobh Dugan O’Looney will be at the Hootenanny to share information about available resources and local learner’s sessions.

“We’re hoping that this becomes a fun annual party to brighten up the darkest part of the year,” says Boom Chicken fiddler Nora Revenaugh, who is coordinating the HOOTENANNY. “The KAC has a history of bringing amazing big-name acts to the area, but we also have a rich music scene right here in CNY. There’s something magical about being a part of new music that’s developing right here at home— and this night is about celebrating that homegrown CNY talent.”

The Lineup:

The Boom Chickens

The Boom Chickens are a local, free-range folk trio from Utica, New York. Their upbeat shows treat audiences to a mix of original tunes, folk classics, and acoustic covers— all delivered with their signature three-part harmonies and creative instrumental arrangements. These long-time friends bring a joyful energy to their shows, drawing listeners in with a mix of earnest sensitivity and raucous play.

Gina Holsopple

Award-winning singer-songwriter Gina Holsopple has released over 10 albums and has been writing music for 25 years. Her music is lyrically driven, with floating melodies that search out the tiny moments of magic that exist amidst the chaos of being human. She owns and runs Gina Marie Music Studio, a small music shop in Oswego, NY that also provides over 100 lessons per week to the wider community.

J. Schnitt

The hardest working pub troubadour in Central New York brings one-man-band arrangements and razor-sharp lyrics to his deep catalog of original songs. Folk poetry with gritty hooks and haunting melodies, J’s songs will stay with you long after the bar closes.

A Quarter to Orange

Quarter to Orange is a Central New York bluegrass band, picking tunes from all eras. Guitarist Shayla Witherell has written original songs that the band performs, and banjo player Cody Witherell and bass player Jameson Dunham add their own unique parts. The band loves various kinds of music and all enjoy the space that the bluegrass genre allows for improvisation with acoustic tradition.

Live Recording at Hobin Studio

This date and time is tentative. When it is officially confirmed, I will let y'all know.

I'm working on putting together a new record! This will be put together as a "Live" album during the time of COVID. We'll be live streaming the recording of the band's live performance in studio.

Come be a part of the fun! Tune in! Give feedback! Listen to the music! Get an insiders view of the recording process.

Over the next 3 weeks I will be picking out 7-9 songs to put on the record. If you would like to be part of the song choice process, please let me know! I'll send a different tune every few days and you let me know which ones are your faves.

Can’t wait!
